OPM has been working with the police, local authorities and other agencies over many years – helping our clients to improve the performance of their own organisations and the partnerships in which they work. Our commitment to social results and our understanding of how to promote continuous improvement in performance, help our clients to make a greater impact on levels of crime, fear of crime and antisocial behaviour.
We are particularly committed to working with organisations and agencies -- from both the statutory and voluntary sectors -- who want to find ways of ensuring that offenders are able to step outside the revolving door of re-offending.
Examples
- 'Connected' events: tackling gun, knife and gang-related crime: Connected 1 and 2 were two whole system events designed to explore how to enhance work by communities and Government agencies separately and together so that even more could be achieved in reducing the threat of gun and knife related crime. OPM co-designed and facilitated these events. Further information
- Commission on Young Adults in the Criminal Justice System We helped the Commission reach conclusions about how best to address the issue that, while young adults aged 18-21 are at the peak age for offending, few programmes and services are aimed specifically at those over 18. More information
- Communication: review of communication practices We helped a local probation board to develop its internal communication strategy in support of wider organisational development.
- Equality: developing anti-discrimination and diversity practice We were the first organisation of our kind to run women-only and black & minority ethnic-only management development programmes for the police services. More recently we have helped a large urban police force to carry out a review of its own gender-based diversity development programme.
- Local accountability We helped a large provincial force take stock of its new organisational structure and determine how this might affect the local accountability (and joined-up working) of its police services. We used workshops, a large-scale simulation and 'open space' methods.
- Police authorities We have helped police authorities and connected organisations to review their governance arrangements: this has involved coaching, away-days and best value reviews.
- Police community support officers: deployment We designed and ran a 'whole system' simulation for a large urban police service to help them plan the roll out of PCSOs in their city.
- Police futures By designing and then running a series of 'future focus groups', we assisted one police force to produce a dynamic environmental scan of its future as a stimulus for strategic debate amongst its senior leaders and partners.
- Police service reconfiguration and collaboration We have helped several police services to review and redesign their own plans, and those of their partnership(s), for increased joint-working on a range of protective and back room services.
- Prison Dental Health Services This study reviewed the modernisation plans and subsequent progress made in all prison dental health services in England. In our report of this work we conclude with ten positive suggestions for SHAs, PCTs and prison dental health services, which together could make a real difference to the dental health and care of prisoners.
