Some of the most interesting learning from the Total Place pilots has not been the headline numbers in terms of projected cost savings, but the powerful impact that a combination of creative thinking and deep analysis has on the way managers and professionals look at social problems. The scale of cuts in public spending means that a Total Place approach is far more valuable than a quick and easy 'salami-slicing' exercise, since it offers the possibility of changing the way we think about how we meet social needs in the future.
