The quality of the chief executive–chair relationship can set the tone, behavioural style and priorities for your NHS organisation. OPM recently conducted research into what makes for a successful chief executive–chair partnership as well as the behaviours that result in the relationship breaking down. Here are ten 'top tips' to help make the relationship work well.

Joe Bonnell, Associate Fellow at OPM, spoke about 'preventing Violent extremism in Schools' at the conference 'Promoting cohesion and safeguarding against extremism in schools, colleges and universities' on 21 May.This presentation describes OPM research into teaching methods that help build resilience to violent extremism. It gives a brief overview of project and background and shares some emerging findings.

Members could play a greater role in consciously building social capital and enhancing the contribution of individuals and groups to social outcomes (what is often termed co-production). This could contribute to a changed relationship between citizens and the state, and in turn, reduce demand for services. It might also lead to increased public satisfaction with local government and for some members increased satisfaction with their role.

As public spending reduces over the next few years, managers and politicians will be seeking to re-negotiate the unspoken ‘contract’ between local government and local people. The new Prime Minister’s references to the ‘big society’ suggest that if public services are to cope with the difficult times ahead, a new sort of leadership is needed in our communities.
